Customers rave about their experiences, highlighting the outstanding sushi and delicious miso soup, which some describe as "almost a light stew" filled with tofu and wakame. Ellie McGaughey couldn't wait to return, eager to explore more of the hot specialties. Indeed, it seems that Umi Maui is not just about sushi but about crafting memorable dining encounters.
If you're seeking something truly unique, try the Poke Bowl, hailed as the best by Airwreck Eggplant, or indulge in the lobster truffle udon soup—a first-class dish that showcases the creativity of their kitchen. The smoked Cali roll, served in a dramatic presentation, adds an extra layer of excitement to your meal.
The welcoming staff contributes to an overall comfortable dining experience. Hiilani Lipe noted how pleasant the service was, while others echoed similar sentiments about the friendly atmosphere, making it easy to linger and enjoy your meal. While the restaurant has a cozy layout, it's worth noting that indoor spaces are separated by plastic sheets for comfort and safety, especially in these times.
Despite some comments about pricing, with references to "sticker shock," patrons feel that the quality truly justifies the expense. Paul Kalkman mentioned the top-shelf fish and the fluffy rice, both key elements that set Umi Maui apart from other sushi spots. The absence of a liquor license may steer some away; however, the focus here is on delivering exceptional food.

I went in to finally try them out! I'll admit to some sticker shock. I got some miso soup, a rainbow roll, salmon nigiri, and scallop nigiri. The miso was almost a light stew with all the tofu and wakame. It was a great surprise. The rainbow roll, basically a California roll with various fish toppings, was made with real crab instead of the usual haddock imitation crab. The salmon was thick sliced and buttery. Unlike most American sushi there was wasabi underneath it. The scallop had an odd twang. I probably won't get that one next time. I was expecting noodles, and went for that. The gentleman I spoke with said that it's been so hot that nobody was ordering it, so it's become a seasonal dish. Once it's cooler it'll be back. I'll return to try that.
